If white peony is taken symptomatically as prescribed by the doctor, no toxic side effects will generally occur. However, it should be noted that Paeonia lactiflora should not be used in conjunction with Veratrum, because Paeonia lactiflora and Veratrum are “eighteen against” in the principle of Chinese medicine, and their simultaneous use may affect the efficacy of the medicine. White peony is bitter, sour and slightly cold in nature. It belongs to the liver and spleen meridians. It has the effects of nourishing blood and regulating menstruation, astringing yin and stopping sweating, softening the liver and relieving pain, calming the liver and suppressing yang. It is used in treating blood deficiency, menstrual disorders, spontaneous sweating, night sweating, dystocia (pain in the area of coercion and ribs), abdominal pain, contracture of the limbs, headache and dizziness. If Bai Shao is used for treating deficiency of liver and blood, loss of nourishment of meridians, resulting in irregular menstruation, leakage in collapse, dizziness, it can be combined with Angelica sinensis, Rhizoma Ligustici Chuanxiong, and Radix Rehmanniae Praeparata, in order to nourish the blood and regulate menstruation. White peony should be taken under the guidance of a physician, not blindly.
