Corns can not heal by themselves, the occurrence of corns is related to the excessive proliferation of the stratum corneum caused by long-term mechanical stimulation (such as pressure and friction). Corns are common in adults, mostly in women, and occur in prominent stress areas, such as the toes. Typical lesions are yellowish or dark yellow conical plaques with a smooth surface, clear borders, and flat or slightly elevated skin surfaces. The tip of the keratinous plug compresses the peripheral nerves in the dermis, and the pain is obvious when squeezing and walking. Patients are advised to choose shoes of appropriate size and soft texture or shoes lined with thicker cotton pads to minimize friction and compression. Treatment can be surgical excision, laser, freezing or topical medication such as corns cream and salicylic acid ointment. Corns do not heal on their own and should be treated in a standardized manner as prescribed by the doctor.
