Insufficient qi and blood can lead to body wasting, but body wasting is not always caused by insufficient qi and blood, such as yin deficiency can also lead to body wasting, so it needs to be confirmed by clinical diagnosis and treatment. Deficiency of qi and blood is the deficiency of qi and blood in Chinese medicine, which clinically manifests itself in coldness (fear of cold, cold limbs), numbness of hands and feet, spontaneous sweating (involuntary sweating during the daytime, aggravated by sweating with a little movement), dizziness, ringing in the ears, dimming of vision, mental depression, fatigue, palpitations (heartbeat accelerated, often accompanied by panic), shortness of breath, insomnia, dreamy and forgetfulness, etc. Patients with deficiency of qi and blood should be treated with a tonic to replenish qi and blood. Patients with qi and blood deficiency should be treated with qi and blood tonic or qi and blood dual tonic (tonifying both qi and blood together). Clinically, one can take Eight Treasures Soup, which consists of ginseng, atractylodes macrocephala, Poria cocos, angelica sinensis, chuanxiong ligustici, white peony, ripe dixie rhizome, licorice, and is effective in benefiting qi and replenishing blood (replenishing both qi and blood in the body). Yin deficiency is usually caused by insufficient Yin fluid to nourish and control Yang. Clinically, it can be seen in low-grade fever, heat in the hands and feet, afternoon hot flashes (a burst of fever), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, and sweating stops after waking up), dry mouth and throat, heartburn and insomnia, dizziness and tinnitus, and so on. Patients who are wasted due to yin deficiency can take Six-flavored Di Huang Pill, which has the effect of nourishing yin and tonifying the kidney, and is commonly used clinically for the treatment of lumbar and knee soreness (a feeling of soreness and weakness in the lumbar and knee regions), tinnitus, deafness, spermatorrhea, emaciation, body wasting, and shaking of teeth. It is recommended that patients with emaciation, deficiency of qi and blood, as well as yin deficiency should consult a doctor in time for evidence-based treatment under the doctor’s guidance.
