Earwax is clinically called cerumen, and cerumen formation is called cerumen embolism. Cerumen embolism can be treated by: direct removal, cerumen hook removal, flushing or suction. 1. Direct removal: Cerumen that is movable, soft, not highly adherent to the ear wall, and not completely blocking the external auditory canal can be removed by knee forceps or ear pliers in stages. 2. Removal of cerumen hooks: For movable cerumen that is slightly hard in texture, the cerumen hooks are inserted gently into the deeper part of the external auditory canal through the space between the upper posterior wall of the external auditory canal and the cerumen, and the force of the hand must be controlled. After the hooks are hooked onto the cerumen, the hooks are gently rotated to loosen the cerumen, and the cerumen is slowly pulled outward until the cerumen is removed completely. 3. Rinsing or suction method: For cerumen with poor mobility and hard texture, 3%-5% sodium bicarbonate ear drops are usually put into the ear first to soften the cerumen, and then rinsing of the external auditory canal is carried out after 3 days when the cerumen becomes soft. If the external auditory canal is narrow and it is difficult to flush out the cerumen, the softened cerumen will be suctioned with a suction device. If you have cerumen impaction, go to the hospital and have the above operation done by a doctor, do not do it at home to avoid damaging the eardrum and affecting your hearing.
