What is a false positive HIV test?

A false positive HIV test means that the HIV test is first performed by the usual HIV testing methods and the result is positive. The patient is then tested with a confirmatory test for AIDS and the result is negative. This means that the patient is not infected with AIDS, but the previous test shows that the patient is positive, which is called a false positive. Currently, most hospitals in China use the HIV antibody test, which is mainly ELISA, chemiluminescence or immunofluorescence, with a sensitivity of 99%. Once the initial screening is positive, a confirmatory test should be performed using a protein blot test, and only if the confirmatory test is also positive can the patient be confirmed to be infected with AIDS.
