Hemp yam, also known as Chinese yam, has the effects of tonifying the spleen and stomach, generating fluids and lungs (tonifying the lungs and generating fluids), and tonifying the kidneys and astringing the essence (tonifying the kidneys and stabilizing the kidney essence). Yam is a qi tonic with a sweet taste and flat nature, and belongs to the lung, spleen and kidney meridians. It mainly treats deficiency of spleen and lung qi (insufficient qi in the lungs and spleen), deficiency of stomach yin (insufficient yin fluid in the stomach), deficiency of lung yin (insufficient yin fluid in the lungs), and deficiency of the kidneys (weak kidneys that cannot stabilize the essence), with common symptoms such as loss of appetite, fatigue (mental exhaustion and weakness), diarrhea, coughing and wheezing, spermatorrhea, leucorrhoea, and urinary frequency. Chinese yam can be combined with lock yang for spermatorrhea due to kidney yang deficiency; with Codonopsis pilosula for loss of appetite, tiredness and weakness, diarrhea; with Gorgon fruit for diarrhea, spermatorrhea, leucorrhoea, urinary incontinence; with pollen of smallpox for heartburn and thirst; and with Cornu Cervi Pantotrichum for lumbar and knee soreness (feeling of soreness and weakness of lumbar and knee), dizziness and tinnitus. Note: caution should be exercised in the use of Chinese yam for those with abdominal distension, food accumulation (food that is poorly digested and stagnates in the stomach), dyspepsia, and cough with excessive phlegm.
