Job’s tears, Coix lacryma, efficacy and role is to facilitate water seepage and permeability of dampness, etc., used for spleen deficiency and diarrhea (diarrhea caused by weak function of the spleen) and other certificates, Poria strengthens the spleen and tranquillizes the heart and other effects, used for phlegm (pathology products formed by impaired metabolism of water and fluid), edema and so on. 1. Job’s tears are cool in nature, sweet and light in flavor, and belong to the spleen, stomach and lung meridians. Its effects include strengthening the spleen, stopping diarrhea, removing paralysis, inducing water seepage and penetrating dampness, detoxifying and dispersing knots, and draining pus. It can be used to treat spleen deficiency and diarrhea, lung carbuncle, edema, foot odor, dysuria, dampness paralysis and constriction (convulsions), intestinal carbuncle (carbuncle occurring in the intestines and bowels, manifested by fever, pain in the right abdomen, and palpable lumps). Adverse reactions and contraindications are not clear; attention to pregnant women, spleen deficiency without dampness, stool dryness and knots should be taken with caution. 2. Poria is flat in nature, sweet and light in flavor, belonging to heart, lung and spleen. Its effects are strengthening the spleen and seeping dampness, inducing diuresis and eliminating edema (facilitating urination and eliminating edema), nourishing the heart, treating palpitation (accelerated heartbeat, often accompanied by panic), insomnia, edema, diarrhea due to spleen deficiency (diarrhea caused by a weak spleen), and phlegm and drink. Adverse effects are not clear. Note that it should be taken with caution in cases of yin deficiency without dampness-heat, qi deficiency with subsidence, and deficiency of cold and essence with slippery. If you need to use Coix lacryma and Poria, it should be applied under the diagnosis of traditional Chinese medicine practitioners, and should not be taken on its own to avoid adverse consequences.
