There are many types of foreign bodies in the external auditory canal, which can be categorized as animal, plant and non-biological. It is common in children because they like to insert small objects into the ear. Adults can also occur, mostly due to digging the ear when the stick or cotton branch broken into the ear. Insects can fly or crawl into the external auditory canal during summer sleepovers or field work and farming trips. Live insects and other animal foreign bodies can crawl and stir in the ear canal, causing severe ear pain and tinnitus. At home, they can be drowned with drops of glycerin, sesame oil, or even peanut oil. In hospitals, they can be anesthetized and paralyzed with drops of 2% bupivacaine, 70% alcohol, or a non-toxic skin insecticide, and then removed with tweezers or rinsed and discharged. In uncooperative young children, foreign bodies can be removed under general anesthesia. Round smooth foreign body, can cause ear pain, tinnitus, reflex cough, can be used to hook the foreign body hook or small scraper spoon and other instruments along the gap over the foreign body and hook it out, do not use forceps to clip, in order to prevent the foreign body pushed into the depths of the isthmus, embedded in the tympanic membrane or damage. When the foreign body is small, it can be washed out by rinsing method. Plant-based foreign bodies swell in water, which can compress the external auditory canal and cause swelling and pain. For foreign bodies that have been soaked and swollen, such as beans, 95% alcohol should be dripped into them to make them dehydrated and shrunken before removing them. If infection occurs, the foreign body should be removed after anti-infection treatment. Alternatively, the foreign body may be removed in stages. Foreign bodies in the external auditory canal are not difficult to deal with, the key is to deal with them early and remove them.
