Classification of ataxia

Ataxia can be categorized into sensory ataxia, cerebellar ataxia, vestibular ataxia and cerebral ataxia. 1. Sensory ataxia: Due to the obstacle of deep sensory conduction path, joint position sense, vibration sense and other obstacles, the patient appears to be unsteady in standing, feeling of stepping on cotton when walking, and the symptom is more obvious when the eyes are closed, and the symptom is gradually relieved when the eyes are opened. 2. Cerebellar ataxia: lesions of afferent or efferent fibers in the cerebellum can cause cerebellar ataxia, and this type of ataxia is not affected by eye opening and closing. It is usually characterized by unsteadiness in standing, swaying from side to side when walking, inability to walk in a straight line, and stumbling. It is sometimes accompanied by eye and speech disorders and hypotonia. 3. Vestibular ataxia: Caused by damage to the vestibular system, the symptoms are mainly balance disorders, and the patient has balance problems both at rest and in movement. The same point as cerebellar ataxia is that the body is unstable when standing, tilting backward, walking skewed, etc. Most patients are accompanied by vertigo. Most of the patients are accompanied by vertigo, vomiting and other symptoms. 4. Cerebral ataxia: Cerebral ataxia has milder symptoms than cerebellar ataxia, and is most commonly seen in cerebrovascular disease, multiple sclerosis, and other diseases that damage the fiber connections of the frontal and temporal-occipital bridge bundles. It manifests as postural balance disorder with unsteady gait and leaning backward or to one side, but the symptoms are mild. It is often accompanied by increased muscle tone, positive pathologic reflexes, and psychiatric symptoms. Patients with ataxia should seek medical examination to clarify the cause of the disease and follow the doctor’s instructions.
