Vertigo may be caused by physiologic or pathologic factors. Pathologic factors include ear diseases, central nervous system diseases, and systemic diseases. 1. Physiological factors: some people who fall from a high place while taking an airplane, an elevator, or a boat will have a transient vertigo, which can be relieved by themselves. 2. Pathologic factors (1) Ear diseases: acute otitis media, Meniere’s disease, labyrinthitis, cerumen in the external auditory canal may cause vertigo. (2) Central nervous system diseases: cervical spondylosis, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, brainstem hemorrhage, tumors, cerebral infarction, and acoustic neuroma can cause vertigo. (3) Systemic diseases: hypertension, hypotension, uremia, diabetes mellitus, severe cardiac arrhythmia, head and neck trauma, and ophthalmogenic diseases may cause different degrees of vertigo.
