Can I eat chewing gum while orthodontic?

After the patient first bonded aligners (brackets), some orthodontists will explain that in order to prevent the brackets from falling off, can not eat hard things, can not chew bone; can not eat sticky food, such as chewing gum …… So, after wearing braces really can not eat chewing gum? In fact, with the current enamel bonding agent, the bonding strength of the brackets is usually about 10MPa, and no sticky food has a “stickiness” that can reach or approach this level. In other words, if the brackets are properly bonded, it is impossible for the gum to stick off. The only reason for a bracket to fall out is if it is hit hard by a hard object, such as gnawing on a bone. Not only that, but chewing gum during orthodontics should be encouraged precisely! This has three benefits: First, chewing gum helps to clean the mouth. After eating, there will certainly be food debris trapped around the aligners and on the surfaces of the teeth and between the teeth. The best way to do this is of course to brush your teeth. However, in some cases where brushing is not convenient, chewing gum can be a useful alternative. Second, chewing gum can help relieve orthodontic pain. Orthodontic patients have experienced significant tooth pain for 3-7 days after the force is applied. This is because the periodontal membrane expresses various inflammatory factors after being under constant pressure and causes local cell necrosis. Chewing gum can make the teeth produce slight vibration, promote local blood circulation and reduce the necrosis of periodontal membrane cells, thus reducing pain. Third, chewing gum may also promote tooth movement. As mentioned above, chewing gum can make the teeth vibrate slightly, which not only reduces the necrosis of periodontal membrane cells and shortens the “stagnation period” of tooth movement, but also helps to accelerate the completion of periodontal tissue reconstruction, thus promoting tooth movement. Therefore, orthodontic friends should not refuse chewing gum, and should consider chewing gum as their good companion.
