What happens when babies take iron supplements

Routine iron supplements are not usually recommended for infants. If there is an iron deficiency, taking iron supplements may result in dark stools, abdominal pain, and vomiting. Infants before 6 months of age are usually not iron deficient and do not need routine iron supplements. Infants older than 6 months may have iron deficiency. If the deficiency is not serious, dietary modifications can be made first, such as eating eggs, animal liver, spinach and other foods as appropriate. If iron deficiency is more serious, it should be treated with medication as prescribed by the doctor. Some infants may experience gastrointestinal discomfort after taking medication, such as nausea and vomiting, epigastric pain symptoms, and some infants may experience black stools. Normally, you need to observe your baby’s health more often, and if there are any abnormal symptoms, it is best to take your baby to the doctor in time.
