I. Initial consultation
The patient is a 70-year-old male, and his family members told him that his hearing decreased in both ears 10 years ago, accompanied by tinnitus, which was intermittent at first but became persistent afterwards.
After preliminary understanding of the medical history, the patient was advised to complete CT, pure tone audiometry and acoustic conductance examination of the middle ear to clarify the current hearing condition and to exclude any organic lesions in the ear. Based on the patient’s examination results, the preliminary diagnosis of senile deafness was made and the patient was advised to wear hearing aids. At the same time, oral medication to improve circulation and nerve nutrition could be taken to improve tinnitus, and the family expressed their understanding.
II. Treatment history
Because the patient had hypertension and diabetes, it was suggested that the patient needed to take the corresponding medication actively, and must regulate the medication under the guidance of an internist, paying attention to the dosage and related side effects to avoid further damage to the hearing organ. Next, the patient was given drugs to nourish the nerves and improve the circulation, with the aim of delaying the aging process of the auditory organs. The patient was given the application of Ginkgo biloba extract tablets and methylcobalamin dispersible tablets for treatment.
III. Treatment effect
The patient came to the follow-up clinic one month later and could communicate with the doctor normally because he was wearing hearing aids. At present, the patient can communicate and talk normally with family and friends because the hearing problem has been solved, and the quality of life has been greatly improved, and the patient is very satisfied with the treatment effect.
IV. Notes
We are glad that the deafness of this elderly patient has been effectively treated, but we still need to advise the patient and his family to avoid exposing the patient to the noise environment to reduce the stimulation of the inner ear. We need to pay more attention to the psychological and physical health of elderly patients, regular physical examination, and follow up if there is any change in their condition.
V. Personal insight
Therefore, family members should care more about the elderly in their daily life. If they find that the TV or radio is often tuned to a particularly loud sound or speak in a way that does not answer the questions, they should bring the elderly for further examination as early as possible to achieve early detection and treatment to avoid further development of the disease, which may affect the patient’s health and quality of life.
