Prolonged cough is one of the main symptoms of internal cough in Chinese medicine. The Chinese herbal prescriptions that can be taken according to the evidence include Er Chen Ping Stomach San, Qing Jin Hua Phlegm Tang, Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang, Liu Jun Zi Tang, etc. 1. Phlegm-dampness in the lungs: the main symptoms are recurrent cough, white and sticky phlegm, coughing with phlegm, chest tightness, body weight and fatigue, white and greasy tongue coating, and moistened and slippery pulse. The prescription should be Er Chen Ping Stomach San combined with San Zi Nourishing Family Soup plus subtractions, commonly used medicines are Semixia, Poria, Chen Pi and so on. 2. Phlegm-heat and lung congestion syndrome: symptoms mainly manifested as cough with yellow and thick sputum, or blood in sputum, red face, chest tightness, dry mouth and desire to drink, red tongue with yellow and greasy coating, and slippery pulse, etc. The formulae used are Qing Jin Huayi Tang and San Zi Nourishing Family Tang. The prescription uses the clear gold to transform the phlegm soup plus reduction, the common medicine is scutellaria, Zhimu, gardenia and so on. 3. Qi deficiency: symptoms mainly manifested as coughing, sputum white and thin, white face, shortness of breath, lack of energy, gastric energy, spontaneous sweating (sweating involuntarily during the daytime, sweating is aggravated with a little movement), fear of cold, tongue is pale and tender, with teeth marks on the side, pulse is thin and weak, fingerprints are pale. The formula should be Six Gentlemen Tang plus subtractions, commonly used drugs are Codonopsis, Poria, Atractylodes Macrocephala, Glycyrrhiza Uralensis, etc. 4. Lung Yin Deficiency Certificate: Symptoms include dry cough without sputum, or little sputum, or hemoptysis, dry mouth, hot flashes (a burst of fever), night sweating (abnormal sweating after going to sleep, and sweating stops after waking up), red tongue with little moss, and thin pulse (pulse becomes narrower and finer and the rate increases). The formula is Sha Shen Mai Dong Tang plus subtractions, commonly used drugs are Sha Shen, Yu Zhu, Sang Bai Pi, Mai Dong and so on.
