Symptoms and treatment of otitis media

Otitis media is divided into secretory otitis media, purulent otitis media, etc. Different types, symptoms and treatment are different. 1. Secretory otitis media: It is a non-suppurative inflammatory disease, mainly characterized by fluid accumulation in the middle ear and hearing loss. Patients in the acute stage mostly have a history of cold before the onset of the disease, followed by ear pain, hearing loss, a feeling of occlusion or stuffiness in the ear, and intermittent tinnitus; young children show delayed speech development; preschool children show symptoms such as ignoring parents’ calls, inattentiveness, and loud volume when watching TV. Treatment is mostly short-term with antibiotics, antibacterial drugs, glucocorticoids, etc. Nasal sprays can be used when there is nasal congestion; those whose symptoms do not improve need surgical treatment, and children with adenoid hypertrophy or recurrent inflammation of the tonsils need to have their adenoids or tonsils removed. 2.Purulent otitis media: The main symptoms are ear pain, tinnitus, hearing loss, bloody or purulent fluid flowing out of the ear, and crying in infants and children. The acute stage may be accompanied by systemic symptoms such as chills, fever, lethargy and loss of appetite, and pediatric patients may have high fever, convulsions, vomiting, diarrhea and other symptoms. The principles of treatment are anti-infection, drainage and removal of the cause of the disease, such as the early use of adequate antibacterial drugs to control the infection in the acute stage and the use of nasal decongestants or nasal sprays for local treatment. Chronic suppurative otitis media has a long course, lasting for months, years or even decades, during which ear pus and water may occur repeatedly, with few systemic symptoms and few symptoms in the quiescent phase, and with the prolongation of the disease, hearing gradually decreases. Anti-infective treatment is used in the acute phase, and surgery can be considered in the quiescent phase. To sum up, the symptoms of otitis media mainly include ear pain, tinnitus, hearing loss and ear overflow, and the treatment is mainly anti-infection and active removal of the cause.
