Alcohol abuse (or harmful use) is a diagnosis of alcohol use disorder in the International Classification of Diseases, Tenth Revision (ICD-10) and the American System for the Classification of Mental Disorders, Fourth Revision (DSM-IV), and is diagnosed differently from alcohol dependence. Alcohol dependence emphasizes recurrent, compulsive drinking behaviors that the user cannot control, accompanied by varying degrees of tolerance or withdrawal symptoms. Alcohol abuse primarily emphasizes that the drinking behavior leads to significant adverse consequences, such as inability to perform important work, schoolwork, impairment of physical and mental health, and interpersonal, legal, and social functioning. Abuse emphasizes that it causes adverse consequences and does not lead to a significant increase in tolerance or stage syndrome, and conversely is alcohol dependence.
