Normal blood glucose values for newborns

The normal value of blood glucose in newborns is between 2.2 mmol/L and 7.0 mmol/L. ≤2.2 mmol/L is neonatal hypoglycemia, and ≥7.0 mmol/L is neonatal hyperglycemia. Neonatal hyperglycemia is not common in clinical practice, and neonatal hypoglycemia tends to be more common in our clinical work. In general, sugar >2.2mmol/L is normal for newborns. If the baby is not premature, the pregnant woman does not have gestational diabetes, and the child is not a huge baby, there are usually no symptoms of hypoglycemia. If the child’s blood sugar is below 2.2mmol/L, it is hypoglycemia, and it needs to be treated actively. Because hypoglycemia may cause damage and neurological sequelae, clinically hypoglycemic children will show drowsiness and not wake up easily. Prolonged hypoglycemia can affect the child’s intellectual development, so blood sugar is routinely checked after birth.
