Old lumbar compression fractures usually take 2 to 3 months to recover due to poor fracture healing. Fresh fractures are generally recognized within 3 weeks of fracture and those after 3 weeks are called old fractures. Old fractures often result in malunion, delayed healing, and nonunion, with delayed healing being the most common clinical condition. This condition usually requires 2 to 3 months to recover. If a patient with an old lumbar compression fracture has already begun to heal and is not symptomatic, no special treatment is usually required. Patients usually need to stay in bed for conservative treatment and wear a brace to protect the lumbar spine. Patients can relieve pain through physical therapy such as acupressure and massage or by taking pain medication. If the patient has a fracture that does not heal or persistent pain, surgical treatment is needed to correct the problem. Patients should go to the hospital for treatment once an old lumbar compression fracture is detected.
