”Bone spurs, also known as osteophytes, are actually degenerative lesions of the bones, a pathological change in the process of degeneration of the bones, or a physiological phenomenon. Therefore, osteophytes cannot be considered as a disease name, it is an objective existence. Osteomalacia is associated with age, occupation, gender, race, genetics, physical fitness, poor posture and intraosseous venous stasis and intraosseous hypertension. The causative factors of osteophytes are mainly due to cartilage wear caused by imbalance in mechanical stress distribution or excessive loading. Osteomalacia occurs mostly in middle-aged and elderly people over 45 years old, slightly more in men than in women, mostly in areas with high weight-bearing activity, such as the cervical spine, lumbar spine, hip joint and knee joint. If the osteophytes appear in the cervical spine, the patient will have a stiff feeling in the neck, limited activity, a popping sound in the neck activity, and even pain often radiating to the shoulders and upper limbs, and numbness in the hands and fingers. Patients with lumbar spine osteophytes often experience soreness, swelling, stiffness and fatigue in the lumbar spine and soft tissues of the lumbar region, and even restricted bending. If the nerve is compressed, local pain, radiating numbness, burning pain, and throbbing pain in the affected limb may occur, and even intermittent claudication may occur due to spinal stenosis. Patients with osteophytes of the knee joint will experience pain and stiffness when moving the knee joint, difficulty going up and down stairs, pain when squatting, stiffness, popping sound when extending and flexing activities, significant local swelling, pressure pain, and even joint deformity. Osteomalacia is mainly due to the imbalance of mechanical stress distribution or excessive load causing cartilage wear and tear, and is a manifestation of the aging of human bones and joints. As the body ages, aging is inevitable and so is osteophytes, but not all osteophytes will cause pain. Osteomalacia is the result of a compensatory behavior of the body in the face of joint pathology, but when this compensation is broken, there is an imbalance between joint and muscle strength, joint function cannot be maintained, and a series of symptoms, especially pain, occurs when the proliferating bone tissue compresses the surrounding tissue structures. A portion of patients with osteophytes can have their symptoms relieved by medication, physical therapy, and nerve tissue. Surgery is not the preferred treatment modality and should only be considered when elected conservative treatment is ineffective and the condition is severe and seriously affects the patient’s life. Therefore, osteophytes are a manifestation of human aging, and we need to correct poor posture to delay osteophytes, maintain normal movement of the spine and joints, and slow down aging. But if there is pain, you still have to come to the hospital for examination.
