There is no uniform medical conclusion on how long patients can live with ascites in advanced stage of ovarian cancer because there are many factors involved, including tumor stage, mass size and patient’s physical condition, etc. The main issue is whether an appropriate treatment plan can be chosen. For patients with a good type of pathology and able to complete surgery, the postoperative survival rate is relatively high, reaching 2-10 years or possibly longer. If patients with advanced disease are not able to complete the highly desirable tumor cytoreductive surgery, the 5-year survival rate is about 20-30%. Because medical science is advancing, surgical techniques are now much better than before, so it is possible to achieve the maximum possible tumor cell reduction. Secondly, chemotherapy drugs. Nowadays, chemotherapeutic drugs have made great progress compared with the previous ones, and their efficacy and side effects are precise and small. Therefore, through thorough surgery and standardized chemotherapy, the survival rate of ovarian cancer can still be improved. In addition, there is now a kind of targeted therapy, which can improve the treatment effect of ovarian cancer and thus improve the survival rate for patients who have developed drug resistance after surgery and chemotherapy for recurrent disease. For patients with particularly advanced disease where surgery is not possible, the survival rate cannot be determined.
