How to tell if your baby’s ribs are flared

Determining whether your baby has rib ectropion relies on looking at the edges of the ribs to see if they are protruding. Have the child lie flat on his or her back, and if the lowermost edges of the ribs are visibly flaring outward beyond the outer edges of the thorax, consider them to be rib ectopia. Usually the two lowest ribs are not attached to the sternum and are mobile. When a child has rib ectropion, the ribs go beyond the outer edge of the thorax due to their greater breathing and poor support. There is physiologic rib ectropion in babies, which will gradually improve with development, and there may be cases of developmental deformity of the ribs. Therefore, if your baby’s ribs are turned out, you should consult a doctor in time, and after completing the examination to clarify the cause of the disease, the orthopedic surgeon will give you targeted treatment or therapy.
