Children with mumps are usually isolated for 2~3 weeks before going to school, depending on the individual. The incubation period of mumps is 18 days on average. At the beginning, there may be fever, malaise, loss of appetite, headache and other symptoms, but most of the children do not have obvious symptoms; 1-2 days after the onset of the disease, there are zygomatic arches or ear pain, parotid gland enlargement (most of the parotid gland enlargement is seen on one side first), and the opposite side of the parotid gland begins to swell and ache 1-2 days later. Children are highly contagious for about 2 weeks, from 7 days before to 9 days after parotid enlargement. Parotid swelling peaks in 2~3 days and gradually subsides after 4~5 days, the whole course of the disease is 10~14 days. Children are usually isolated for 2-3 weeks before they can go to school, but the recovery time is different for each child, and the exact time is when the disease is completely cured before they can go to school. Children diagnosed with mumps should follow the doctor’s instructions for standardized treatment, and you can consult your doctor about the exact time you can go to school.
