What’s wrong with the white palate of a newborn?

White coloration of the palate in newborns may be associated with horse teeth and thrush. In newborns, yellowish-white granules the size of a grain of rice if appear in the midline of the palate and gums. These granules are formed by the accumulation of epithelial cells or secretion of mucous glands, commonly known as horse teeth. Horse teeth usually fade away naturally after a few weeks and require no special treatment. Thrush is mostly caused by Candida albicans infection due to infection of the birth canal, or contamination of nipples or milk utensils during breastfeeding. White flaky plaques form on the surface of the oral mucosa, which can affect the baby’s appetite. Also in the mouth, white patches can appear not only on the palate, but also on the tongue and other parts of the mouth. There are other causes of white palate in newborns, so it is recommended to consult a doctor and have a relevant examination to identify the cause of the problem, and to carry out targeted treatment or therapy with the help of the doctor.
