Epilepsy is a common neurological disorder with approximately 70 million people worldwide with epilepsy and 50.4/100,000 new cases per year. Epilepsy imposes serious physical, psychological and social burdens on people. It is reassuring to know that about two-thirds of patients with epilepsy can have effective seizure control with reasonable drug therapy. For patients with seizure-free long-term medication control, whether antiepileptic drugs can be withdrawn, the risks, risk factors, timing and methods associated with withdrawal, and the management of recurrence are controversial. In this paper, we summarize the progress made by domestic and international research in the past two decades, hoping to help clinical work.
