Whether a 50-day-old infant’s cough will heal on its own depends on the circumstances and cannot be generalized. Coughing is a normal protective reflex of infants to expel foreign bodies or secretions from the respiratory tract by coughing. If an infant has an occasional light cough, it may be due to an irritating odor or dust entering the respiratory tract, and some infants can gradually heal on their own after the irritant is removed. If the infant’s cough worsens and even interferes with eating and rest, it may be a sign of upper respiratory tract infection, acute bronchitis or bronchopneumonia and should be treated symptomatically under the guidance of a pediatrician to avoid aggravation of the disease. If an infant has a mild cough that does not interfere with daily life, parents should not worry too much about it and just observe it regularly. Note that parents should not use cough medicine on their own, based on experience, when an infant develops a cough, but go to the hospital if necessary.
