This issue used to be hotly debated. But now no one is arguing anymore. The slogan today is “sleep on your back”. If there is no physical reason, all babies should sleep in the supine position. The mere change in sleeping position from prone to supine has reduced the number of infants who die from SIDS by 50%. For most infants, if they are not already accustomed to another sleeping position, they can easily adopt the supine position. The side-lying position is also not as safe as the supine position, because side-lying infants often turn over and sleep on their backs. Therefore, you should have your child sleep on his or her back from the start. All babies cry and fret at times, and it’s often easier to find out why. If you are worried and can’t find the cause, have your doctor examine him to see if there is any pathological reason for his crying. It is more reassuring if your baby is basically developing normally and has had a careful physical examination.
