Patients who have undergone surgery related to meniscus tears may take about six weeks to three months to recover from the surgery. The meniscus needs to be repaired in a timely manner and the patient needs to be braced adequately after the surgery. Most of these patients will remain in bed for about four weeks, during which time they will be instructed in proper functional exercises. After four weeks, the patient may be instructed to gradually move down to the floor for the next phase of exercise. If the patient has recovered well, he or she may be able to walk normally after six weeks. If the injury is too severe or the exercises are inadequate, the recovery may take longer.
