Tackle diabetes, act now

World Diabetes Day (WDD) was launched in 1991 by the World Health Organization and the International Diabetes Federation and is celebrated on November 14 each year to raise global awareness of diabetes. This day was established to commemorate the birth of Frederick Banting and Charles Best, who are best known for their discovery of insulin in 1921. “The resolution was passed on December 20, 2006, elevating World Diabetes Day to the United Nations Diabetes Day. This year’s November 14 is the fifth annual UN Diabetes Day, with the theme “Act Now on Diabetes”. According to the latest survey data, the development of diabetes is advancing rapidly, the prevalence of diabetes in China has reached 9.7%, the number of people with the disease is more than 92 million, the number of people with prediabetes up to 148 million, and about 3,000 new cases of diabetes every day. In the survey, it was found that the undiagnosed rate of diabetes is 60%, nearly 80% of the respondents have substandard blood sugar control, and the fatal rate of cardiovascular disease complicated by diabetes is about 80%. The International Diabetes Federation (IDF) has predicted that the number of people with diabetes in the world will reach 500 million by 2030, and the situation of diabetes prevention and treatment in China is serious. Diabetes has become one of the major diseases of global concern due to its high disability and fatal rate, and the World Health Organization has even called it the “disaster of the 21st century”.
