Syphilis can have a very significant impact on the fetus. When a pregnant woman is infected with syphilis, there are many fetuses that are stillborn or miscarried during the course of the child’s pregnancy because of abnormalities in the development of the internal organs and the nervous system. Some children can be born with congenital abnormalities in the development of the nervous and visceral systems, such as neurosyphilis and cardiovascular syphilis, which can occur at birth or during growth, and this can have an impact on the child’s life expectancy. Some children do not have obvious developmental abnormalities after birth, and there is no obvious neurosyphilis or cardiovascular syphilis appearing in the course of later life, but such children who have syphilis antibody tests suggesting that the patient has fetal syphilis must be treated with antibiotics in a timely manner for such children.
