Precautions for Breast MRI

In most cases, having a breast MRI requires the same precautions as a regular MRI, for example, all metal objects should be removed prior to having an MRI, and breast MRI is not suitable for older and sicker patients as the patient may not be able to tolerate the state of a prolonged MRI. Doing breast MRI has implications for women of childbearing age, and it is advocated that women of childbearing age should have their MRI done on days 7-14 of their menstrual cycle, as hormone levels have a significant impact on the proliferative state of the breast, which in turn affects breast MRI imaging, and breast MRI imaging is better when done within a relatively specific time frame. However, all imaging tests are designed to meet clinical needs, such as the need for breast MRI after hospitalization and surgery the day after, in which case it is not possible to take into account whether or not it is at the optimal scanning time, and should be fundamental to meet clinical needs. It should also be noted that breastfeeding women should avoid the metabolism of the contrast agent through the mammary glands and consequently its absorption by the infant, and therefore it is recommended that breastfeeding women should not breastfeed for 24 hours after an MRI.
