What to do about auricular pain

Auricular pain is most commonly seen in auricular chondromalacia, which can manifest as pain in the auricle and is more intense. On examination, the auricle is red, swollen, and painful to the touch, and can involve the entire auricle. Since the inflammation of the auricle can involve the cartilage and lead to deformity of the auricle, active treatment is required, usually with antibiotics. Cefotaxime sodium and metronidazole are available, and hormone therapy is also required to reduce local symptoms. If the inflammation cannot be controlled after active treatment and purulent chondromyelitis forms, surgical treatment is required, usually auricular abscess excision and drainage is performed along the ear wheel. However, systemic antibiotics are still needed, so a high priority should be given to auricular chondromyelitis.
