To extract or not to extract decayed baby teeth?

The so-called “milk teeth” are our first set of teeth, which generally begin to erupt when the baby is half a year old, and are all in place by the age of six. After that, the child enters the “teething stage” – the baby teeth fall out one after another and the permanent teeth erupt. Until the age of 12 or 13, the permanent teeth become our second set of teeth. Because the milk teeth will be replaced by the permanent teeth sooner or later, when the baby’s milk teeth are decayed, many parents think that the milk teeth will be replaced anyway, and since the baby is in pain, it is better to pull them out first, but in fact, we have to analyze the specific problem. The decayed baby teeth should not be pulled out easily. If the baby teeth are pulled out too early, it will affect the normal chewing function of children and lose the function of inducing the eruption of permanent teeth, which is not conducive to the maintenance of the gap between teeth and may cause the disorder of occlusion and irregularity of teeth. The general principle for the caries of milk teeth is to repair as much as possible first. The caries with shallow cavity will be treated and filled directly. For deep cavities, root canal treatment is needed. Many parents think that root canal treatment is long and painful, and they are afraid of the impact on the permanent tooth germ at the base, so they are worried and resistant. Although the principle of root canal treatment for children’s milk teeth is the same as that for adults, the method and materials are very different, the treatment time is shorter, and most children can accept it, usually without anesthetic. The whole operation of root canal treatment is done inside the baby tooth, so it is not necessary to worry that the permanent tooth embryo will be affected. If the cavity is large and the tooth is thin, the child should be careful not to chew on hard objects after the filling and restoration to avoid tooth breakage. In addition, it is also necessary to have a review every six months after the restoration of the baby teeth. Because the cavity of front teeth is small, the filling is easy to fall off, and it should be refilled in time after it falls off. Some carious teeth should be extracted in time, but some carious teeth should be extracted in time, which requires the doctor’s judgment. The decayed milk teeth close to the tooth replacement period can be extracted; and the milk teeth with serious decay and no restoration value should be extracted in time; the cavities invade the dental nerve and cause severe pain, which seriously interferes with the normal life of the child, in this case the milk teeth should also be extracted. Because the pain will cause the child to chew food with the side of the tooth that is not painful, which will affect the jaw and face development; in addition, sometimes, if the diseased tooth is not removed, the inflammation of the tooth pulp is not inhibited and will develop downward and invade the alveolar bone, which will affect the normal development of the permanent tooth embryo. At this point, the tooth must also be extracted. Many parents wait until their children have severe pain and large cavities in their teeth before they come to see the doctor, which is certainly much more troublesome to deal with. In fact, early tooth decay has no cavity and may only be a small white spot. For the cavity in the sulcus area, it may be just a small black spot at the earliest, with the development of caries, the small black spot will gradually become bigger, after that the caries continues to develop and the surface collapses to form a small hole. If not treated in time, the small hole will become a big hole, and you will start to have soreness when eating hot or cold food or sweet food. When the caries continues to deteriorate and the bacteria invade to the pulp and cause pulpitis, the tooth will start to have severe pain. Therefore, parents must be alert to the initial form of tooth decay and see the doctor for treatment as soon as possible. At the same time, parents should make their children develop the good habit of brushing their teeth carefully in the morning and evening, especially after drinking drinks and eating, they should rinse their mouth with water to wash off the residual food on the surface of teeth.
