The difference between counseling and psychotherapy

People should distinguish what is a psychological problem, what is a psychological disorder, what is a personality disorder, and what is a mental disorder. Psychological problems are common to all people, and are the worries and troubles of daily life; psychological disorders are the manifestation of neurosis, and are the result of psychopathy; personality disorders are the twist of personality, and are the root cause of interpersonal disharmony; mental disorders are organic lesions, and are necessary for effective control with medication. Psychological counseling is growth counseling, which is needed by everyone; psychotherapy is obstacle counseling, which is needed by people with neurosis and personality disorders. In other words, counseling is for development, which makes people seek self-improvement; psychotherapy is for eliminating obstacles, which makes people seek mental health. There is a fundamental difference between counseling and psychotherapy. Counseling is basically an equal counseling relationship with the primary goal of helping the client to think and make decisions independently, while psychotherapy is basically a doctor-patient relationship with the primary goal of curing the patient’s psychological disorder or pathological behavior. Therefore, psychological counseling emphasizes the respect and understanding of the counselor to the client, while psychotherapy emphasizes the obedience and cooperation of the patient to the psychiatrist. Counseling, psychotherapy and life counseling have one thing in common, that is, they all need to respect and understand each other as much as possible. Psychological counseling is to make people learn to be independent and self-sufficient. It is said: “Teach a man to fish, and he will enjoy it for a day. Teach someone to fish, and you’ll have a lifetime of use.
