What to expect after pacemaker surgery?

After a pacemaker has been installed, there are some issues that patients must be aware of in their lives to avoid complications or pacemaker malfunction. Patients with permanent pacemakers should pay special attention to the following aspects 1. Physical activity should be moderate and should be gradual, not too hasty. Avoid strenuous exercise for 1-3 months after surgery, but you can do some daily work and household chores, or choose low-intensity activities such as walking, jogging, qigong practice, flower planting, etc. After 3-6 months of surgery, young and middle-aged people who are in good health can resume work, and elderly patients should follow medical advice on exercise 2. It is important to maintain a good routine, be cheerful, and keep emotional stability, while quitting smoking and drinking, and eating should not be too full. In addition, the skin at the buried pacemaker should be carefully protected to avoid external impact. 3. Learn to self-test the pulse and self-monitor the work of the pacemaker. Postoperative pulse monitoring should be done every day in the same physical state, e.g., every morning after waking up or after 15 minutes of meditation. At the beginning of the placement and when the battery life is approaching, pulse detection at the beginning can understand the pacing situation, and detection at the end can detect the remaining battery energy early. Patients with pacemakers should be followed up once a month, 3 months, half a year and once a year in the future to determine whether the pacemaker is working properly. If you feel palpitations, chest tightness, dizziness, slow self-test pulse, or have difficulty in breathing, swelling of legs and ankles, you should go to the hospital immediately. 5.Adhere to the necessary medication. The pacemaker cannot cure the original disease of the heart, the patient should not be paralyzed and still need to take coronary heart disease and other medications. 6. Patients should carry pacemaker cards with them and take the initiative to tell their doctors that they have a pacemaker when they see them. Also avoid interference with pacemaker function by external factors: 1. Avoid approaching large magnetic fields after installation, do not worry about general electrical appliances, and place the answering phone in the ear opposite to the installation site. Check the pacemaker function and battery condition regularly according to the medical prescription. 2. If there is no serious organic heart disease or other disease limitation, normal work can be resumed after pacemaker implantation. 3. For the first week after the implantation of the pacemaker, the arm on the implanted side should not be raised above the head or strenuously moved. 4. For three months after implantation, avoid strenuous activities on the implanted side of the arm. 5. Avoid bearing weight on the implanted side of the pacemaker for the rest of your life. 6. If you are driving, avoid hitting or pressing the pacemaker with the seat belt, and put a cushion to disperse the pressure. 7. Avoid opening the hood to repair the car engine. 8.In principle, sauna or hot bath has no effect on the pacemaker, but if you have severe primary heart disease (e.g. severe coronary artery disease and no intervention of vascular lesions), high water temperature may be detrimental to you, so please seek your doctor’s advice when you are discharged from the hospital or at a later review. 9. Sexual life does not affect pacemakers in principle, but is related to the primary disease, so please seek the advice of the doctor in charge. 10. Moderate alcohol consumption does not affect the pacemaker. The pacemaker itself is not affected by diet. 11. If you travel by airplane, presenting your pacemaker card will exempt you from security checks. 12. Avoid bringing magnets close to the pacemaker, including all magnetic therapy fitness equipment, microwave ovens, etc. 13. Ensure that all common electrical appliances are grounded and avoid contact with devices that leak electricity. 14. Ensure that you are more than 30 cm away from the pacemaker when using a cell phone, and use the same principles as for cell phones when using a cordless phone. 15. Driving a motorcycle or riding in a violently bumpy car may have an effect on the frequency-adapted pacemaker, follow the doctor’s advice specifically. In the unlikely event that the pacemaker is disturbed and does not work properly, you may experience palpitations, dizziness, weakness, or even fainting, or a sudden change in pulse pattern, or you may feel the same symptoms as before the pacemaker was implanted. These symptoms usually disappear quickly after the disruption is removed. If the symptoms persist after you are sure that you are free from the disturbance, inform your doctor as soon as possible!
