The First Epilepsy Academic Salon in Hunan Province, jointly organized by the Department of Neurosurgery, Department of Neurology and Department of Pediatrics of Xiangya Hospital, Central South University, was successfully concluded on July 25. This marks a new level of epilepsy diagnosis and treatment in Hunan Province. In the neurology field of Hunan Province, the top neurosurgery and neurology departments of Xiangya Hospital are ranked among the top five in China. This time, the two departments joined forces in order to improve the diagnosis and treatment of epilepsy, and held an epilepsy academic salon together with the Department of Pediatrics. At the meeting, all three departments presented the latest achievements in epilepsy research and treatment, especially neurosurgery, which dissected several difficult cases of drug-refractory epilepsy and demonstrated the advanced level of neurosurgery in preoperative evaluation and development of surgical plans. The Epilepsy Academic Salon, which used to be held only in big cities like Beijing and Shanghai. This time, the epilepsy experts, led by Director Yang Zhiquan, aimed to improve the level of epilepsy in Hunan Province and alleviate the difficulty of seeing epilepsy patients. We gathered our provincial colleagues together to discuss and work together to build a platform for cooperation and exchange among major hospitals in the field of intractable epilepsy in Hunan Province, in order to continuously standardize the treatment of epilepsy in our province and improve the level of epilepsy treatment in our province for the benefit of epilepsy patients. According to statistics, there are about 9 million patients with epilepsy in China, of which about 65% do not receive formal treatment, and about 20% to 30% develop drug-refractory epilepsy. With the continuous progress of imaging spine electrophysiology technology, surgical treatment of refractory epilepsy is gradually accepted as an effective method by the majority of doctors and patients. According to the advanced experience at home and abroad, epilepsy surgical treatment is due to the joint participation of physicians from neurology, neurosurgery, neuropsychology, EEG spine neuroimaging and other departments, integrated clinical, electrophysiological and imaging treatments, joint participation in preoperative evaluation, and development of detailed surgical treatment plan, postoperative medication and follow-up. Because of this, Xiangya Hospital has established a true epilepsy treatment center, which can take up the diagnosis and treatment of drug-refractory in Hunan Province, and has reached the leading level in China from the results of the conference.
