Dry cough without phlegm is recognized in Chinese medicine as cough caused by dry heat injury to the lungs or deficiency of qi and yin. If patients with dry heat injury to the lungs have a dry cough, bitter mouth, yellow urine and yellow nasal discharge, they can use mulberry leaves, almonds, loquat leaves, bei mou, bai mou, bai hua flower, figs stewed in lean meat soup or chicken soup. As for patients with deficiency of qi and yin who have dry cough without phlegm, thirst without bitterness in the mouth, and dry stools, they can use tai chen ginseng, maitake, dendrobium, and astragalus to stew lean meat soup, or stewed soup with raw rhizome of the earth, ripe rhizome of the earth, and lily of the valley, which is also effective in improving deficiency of qi and yin and dry cough without phlegm.
