Does contact between a pregnant woman and a dog affect the fetus?



A short period of contact between a pregnant woman and a dog will generally have no effect on the fetus. A long period of contact between a pregnant woman and a dog, and frequent cleaning of the dog’s feces, may cause Toxoplasma gondii virus infection, which may have an effect on the fetus.

Pregnant women with short time and few times of contact with dogs, generally does not affect the fetus, but to prevent being bitten by the dog, so as not to break the skin and bleeding. Toxoplasma gondii infection may occur when a pregnant woman has frequent contact with dogs, or when she does not wash her hands in time after cleaning up the dog’s feces and then eats.

Toxoplasma gondii virus infection in early pregnancy may increase the chances of abnormal development of the fetus, such as microcephaly, etc. It may also increase the chances of miscarriage of the fetus. Fetal infection in late pregnancy may be accompanied by severe neurological disorders and so on.

Pregnancy should be followed by regular labor and delivery checkups, and early medical attention should be sought if there is any discomfort.
