What to do if you are severely constipated

Severe constipation needs to follow the doctor’s instructions to adjust the diet, drink more water, moderate exercise, medication, surgical treatment, but also need to identify the cause of the disease, to exclude organic lesions. 1. Adjust diet: patients with severe constipation need to eat a balanced diet, eat more food rich in dietary fiber, such as wheat bran or brown rice, green leafy vegetables, pectin-rich fruits such as bananas, dragon fruits, etc., to adsorb water in the intestinal lumen, increase the capacity of feces, stimulate peristalsis, and relieve constipation. 2. Drink more water: patients with severe constipation should drink no less than 2,000ml of water per day, which can lubricate the intestinal tract and increase the secretion of intestinal mucus, thus relieving constipation. 3. Moderate exercise: patients need to carry out moderate exercise, such as walking, jogging and abdominal self-massage, which can also promote intestinal peristalsis and help relieve constipation. 4. Medication: Clinically used medications for constipation include lactulose oral solution, bifidobacteria capsules, etc. Patients need to take medication under the guidance of a doctor, and should not take medication blindly on their own. 5. Surgery: If constipation recurs and the symptoms are serious, affecting work and life, surgical treatment should be considered, and the surgical methods include total bowel resection or subtotal resection, anastomotic hemorrhoidal circumcision and so on. Severe constipation is recommended to consult a doctor in time, improve the digestive tract imaging, abdominal CT scanning and other examinations, to exclude intestinal obstruction, intestinal tumors and other organic lesions, and take general treatment, drug treatment and other measures as prescribed by the doctor.
