New advances in the treatment of thymoma and myasthenia gravis

  From October 24 to 25, 2013, a national continuing medical education program “New Advances in Diagnosis and Treatment of Thymoma” was successfully held at the conference center of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, hosted by the Department of Thoracic Surgery of Tianjin Medical University. Professor Zhou Qinghua, Vice President of Tianjin Medical University and a nationally renowned expert in thoracic surgery and oncology, Professor Shi Fudong, Director of Department of Neurology of Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, a “Changjiang Scholar” and a special expert of the National “Thousand Talents Program”, as well as Many famous experts from Peking Union Medical College Hospital, Peking University Cancer Hospital, Tianjin Cancer Hospital and General Hospital of Tianjin Medical University gave wonderful lectures for this course.  Professor Zhang Peng, director of thoracic surgery at Tianjin Medical University General Hospital, who is in charge of this continuing medical education program, said, “Thymoma is associated with many autoimmune diseases. In recent years, the development of minimally invasive thoracoscopic surgery, expanded surgery, perioperative autoimmune disease management and multidisciplinary treatment synthesis have greatly improved the efficacy of thymoma treatment. In this workshop, a series of lectures were given on imaging and pathological diagnosis of thymoma, standardized diagnosis and treatment of thymoma, gene detection and gene targeting therapy, and new advances in the treatment of related immune diseases, etc. A demonstration of thoracoscopic and expanded surgery for thymoma was also arranged. A seminar on myasthenia gravis and thymus disease was held jointly with the Department of Neurology. Nearly 200 thoracic surgeons and neurologists from Beijing, Hebei and Tianjin attended the seminar, which improved the understanding of thymoma and its combined autoimmune diseases.
