Amaranth is often taken in a watery decoction.
Amaranth is the dried above-ground part of the plant Amaranthaceae. It is sour in flavor and cold in nature. It belongs to the liver and large intestine meridians. It is effective in clearing heat and removing toxins, cooling the blood to stop bleeding and stopping dysentery.
It can be used in the treatment of fever and blood dysentery (dysentery caused by feeling heat and poison, with blood in the stool), carbuncle furuncle, dengtoxin (acute infections, with reddening of the skin as if painted), snake and insect bites, eczema, hemorrhoidal blood, hemorrhagic leakage, and hemorrhagic discharges (excessive menstrual flow or more than a few drops of menstruation).
It is also used in the treatment of damp-heat in the large intestine, abdominal pain and diarrhea, or dysentery with pus and blood (diarrhea with pus and blood in the feces), and internal urgency and posterior heaviness (discomfort in the lower abdomen, a strong desire to relieve stool, and a feeling of incomplete defecation after defecation), and can be used in combination with Scutellaria baicalensis and Coptis lutea.
For the treatment of fire-heat and toxicity, carbuncle, furuncle, salpingitis, snake and insect bites, eczema, it can be combined with Chonglou, Fengyin and Dandelion; for the treatment of damp-heat in the large intestine and hemorrhoidal hemorrhage, it can be combined with Diyu, Sophora angustifolia, Fengyao Cao and so on.
