Leg cramps may be a sign of arterial ischemic disease of the lower extremities

Case: The patient, female, 56 years old, had frequent episodes of muscle cramps in her calves, which were strong at night, initially 1-2 times a night. The symptoms were gradually reduced after active treatment by Chinese and Western medicine for many years. We often encounter such patients in the clinic, already suffering from diabetic foot, atherosclerotic occlusive disease, thrombo-occlusive vasculitis, often appear leg cramps, aggravated at night, mistaken for calcium deficiency, a long time a large number of calcium supplements, and delayed diagnosis and treatment, so that the condition worsened, the lesson is profound. Leg cramps are known as muscle spasms, which are spontaneous tonic contractions of the muscles. The most common muscle spasms occur in the calves and toes, and are painful when they occur. There are many causes of leg cramps, including calcium deficiency, ischemic diseases of the lower extremities (e.g., lower extremity atherosclerosis-occlusive disease, thrombo-occlusive vasculitis, and diabetic foot), lumbar disc herniation, and degenerative spinal lesions, which can cause muscle cramps in the lower extremities. Other aspects of cold stimulation, excessive sweating or strenuous exercise, swimming, hiking, etc. can also cause calf cramps. In short, the causes of calf cramps are many, occasional episodes do not need to be nervous, but if frequent episodes, and last longer, should be considered whether suffering from other diseases. The actual leg cramps are not blindly supplemented with calcium, especially for middle-aged and elderly people with a family history of cardiovascular disease, hypertension, hyperlipidemia, and diabetes. When symptoms such as lower limb pain and leg cramps occur, you should think about whether there is lower limb artery stenosis or occlusion, and should go to the peripheral vascular disease department of the hospital as soon as possible. Chinese medicine is still very effective in treating different causes of leg cramps based on dialectical evidence, mainly by activating blood circulation and relieving pain.
