What is obstructive sleep apnea syndrome?

Snoring is a serious problem. However, if there is a snoring king at home, not only will the rest of the family be seriously affected, but the snorer himself may also suffer – snoring is a danger sign of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. When a night snorer repeatedly has apnea during night sleep and sleepiness during the day, please do not take it lightly and continue to “rest easy”, but should be alert to whether you have suffered from obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. The so-called obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is a syndrome characterized by partial or complete occlusion of the upper airway during sleep. Obesity, hypertension, coronary heart disease, arrhythmia, stroke and other cardiovascular diseases, nasopharyngeal disorders, diabetes, smoking and alcoholism, and many other factors are closely related to it. This is not a rare disease – domestic and international reports show that the prevalence of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome reaches about 4% in adults and over 30% in the elderly population over 60 years old. In general, obesity, thick and short neck; repeated snoring at night, irregular breathing, repeated breath-holding and waking up, poor sleep quality, daytime listlessness and mental discomfort – people who can match these performances are most likely to be patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome and need to go to the hospital for sleep monitor examination The patient needs to go to the hospital for sleep monitoring to obtain timely diagnosis and early treatment. Many people mistakenly believe that snoring is a normal manifestation of good sleep, even if they repeatedly have apnea, breath-holding and wake up, they still do not go to the hospital, even if they are reminded by the doctor, they still do not care. In fact, the harm of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome should not be underestimated. To use an analogy, the external environment is a river, oxygen is water, the human body is a field of water, the body’s self-regulation is a pumping machine, the respiratory tract is the water pipe, in the pumping machine work diligently, the water from the river is pumped up the pipe irrigation into the field of water. The obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is equivalent to a blockage in the water pipeline, the lumen becomes narrow, the rapid flow of water hitting the narrow pipe makes a noise that is a snoring sound, and the water flow in the pipe also decreases. When the workload of the pumping machine reaches its limit, the water flow will still be reduced or even interrupted, and the paddy fields will dry up and the seedlings will wither. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome first of all causes a serious decrease in the quality of sleep for the family and the patient himself. The snoring is so loud and undulating that it seriously disturbs the sleep of family members and even leads to their neurological weakness. The patient himself repeatedly wakes up, tosses and turns, and does not get sufficient good rest and recuperation. Secondly, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome causes repeated pauses in breathing, resulting in a sharp decrease in oxygen inhalation, a decrease in oxygen concentration in the blood, and an inability to adequately supply the needs of various organs in the body, which increases the burden on the heart, thus inducing and aggravating hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, arrhythmia, headaches and other serious cardiovascular diseases; hypoxia also has adverse effects on the endocrine and neuropsychiatric conditions of patients, such as Decreased libido, impotence, increased risk of diabetes and hyperlipidemia, depression, anxiety, personality changes, hallucinations, etc. Chronic sleep deprivation and severe oxygen deprivation during sleep also cause irreversible damage to the brain, making patients less responsive, less efficient in memory and learning, and even dementia. In addition, obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is also a cunning “invisible killer”. It can induce or aggravate many cardiovascular diseases, endangering the health and life of patients, and even life. Obstructive sleep apnea syndrome causes patients to be lethargic, drowsy or even fall asleep at work during the day, which is especially dangerous for people working at height, driving cars or airplanes, and can lead to major accidents and casualties. When severe obstructive sleep apnea syndrome causes patients to have pauses in breathing for more than 120 seconds at night, the patients are very likely to die suddenly. Four-way cooperation to overcome the stubborn disease 1, improve lifestyle Create a quiet and comfortable, well ventilated sleep environment, and do not drink alcohol for at least 3 hours before bedtime (it is best to give up alcohol completely), and be careful with sleeping pills and sedatives, because they can make shallow and slow breathing, aggravate snoring and lack of oxygen. Prevent and treat diseases such as colds and rhinitis, as they can aggravate the condition by causing congestion and edema in the respiratory mucosa and aggravating airway narrowing. Sleeping in the supine position will cause the tongue to fall back, and lying on a high pillow will make the airway bend, thus aggravating airway narrowing; therefore, patients should sleep in a lateral position, preferably in the right lateral position, with the head slightly tilted back, to effectively keep the airway open. Wine will make breathing shallow and slow; cigarettes will stimulate the nasal mucosa, and the inflammation-induced mucosal edema and increased secretions will aggravate the airway blockage. Therefore, patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome need to say no to alcohol and tobacco as much as possible. Weight loss can reduce apnea symptoms, so patients with obstructive sleep apnea syndrome should have a light, nutritious and balanced diet, eat a good breakfast, a full meal and a small dinner, control snacks and late night snacks, insist on proper exercise and actively reduce weight. 2.Targeted Western medical treatment surgery, oral appliances and continuous positive pressure ventilator are the three most effective means of Western medical treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. Surgery can immediately solve or relieve the symptoms of snoring and waking up by artificially expanding the airway of nasopharynx and oropharynx. However, it is more traumatic for patients and involves considerable difficulty and risk, and recurrence may occur years or even months after surgery. In contrast, placing an orthodontic appliance in the mouth during sleep to dilate the airway is convenient and simple, and is quite effective for patients with mild to moderate obstructive sleep apnea syndrome. However, it is less effective in severe patients; and wearing oral orthoses may make patients feel uncomfortable or even painful, which affects patients’ long-term adherence to treatment. The preferred method is to wear a continuous positive pressure ventilator during sleep, which adds air to a certain pressure and then blows open the blocked airway to correct hypoxia. Although ventilators are expensive, they are safe, non-invasive and effective. It is worthwhile for patients who can afford it to exchange a large one-time investment for long-term sleep improvement and health. 3.TCM adjuvant treatment The Chinese medicine treatment for obstructive sleep apnea syndrome is also developing in the exploration. At present, TCM treatment is mainly administered by means of herbal injections and tonics, acupuncture and moxibustion to dissolve phlegm and dampness, remove blood stasis, replenish deficiency, adjust disordered functions, relieve patients’ symptoms and improve the numerous complications of obstructive sleep apnea syndrome, such as obesity, hypertension, coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, endocrine disorders, neuropsychiatric diseases, etc. 4, family members to help the disease goes like a draw, the treatment of sleep apnea syndrome is a long process. Avoidance of medical treatment, broken jars, eager to achieve and other wrong ideas, or can not resist the temptation of tobacco, alcohol or high-fat and high-sugar food, lazy, can not adhere to long-term practices, will lead to delayed treatment, repeated, frustration, aggravate the patient’s tension, anxiety, irritability, fear, irritability, frustration, all kinds of negative emotions and obstruct the patient’s cooperation and adherence to treatment, resulting in a vicious circle. As the patient’s closest and most dependent person, family members need to understand the patient’s vulnerability and pain, provide more support and help, urge him/her to seek medical treatment on time, encourage him/her to persevere, praise him/her for every progress, and help him/her overcome the disease.
