Bowlegs is a type of knee deformity, also known as inversion of the knee, which is most common in children. When standing naturally, the feet can be close together but the knees cannot be close together, and the overall shape of the leg is like an open bow. Bowlegs are mainly caused by malnutrition (e.g. vitamin D deficiency) or bone softening. In addition to standing up too early and poor fracture healing, bowlegs can also be caused by the imbalance of muscle and ligament forces in the legs that are in a chronic state of illness, which ultimately leads to deformity. In the early stage, bowed legs may be asymptomatic or just have difficulty walking and fatigue easily, but in the later stage, it is not possible to stand or walk for a long time, and when walking, the deformity will give you an “eight” or “duck” shaped gait, which affects your appearance. Therefore, if you have bowed legs, it is recommended to go to the hospital and follow the doctor’s instructions for reasonable treatment, and the earlier the treatment, the better.
