Do retinal detachments occur after vitrectomy surgery for anterior retinal membranes?

It is possible for a retinal detachment patient to develop an anterior retinal membrane after vitrectomy surgery. There is no direct correlation between the development of anterior retinal membranes and whether or not the patient has undergone vitrectomy surgery or has had a retinal detachment. Pre-retinal membranes occur when there is chronic inflammation in the retina, resulting in the formation of a proliferative membrane, or when abnormal cells proliferate on the front surface of the retina. Patients who have undergone vitrectomy surgery for retinal detachment cannot completely remove these factors, so there is a possibility of pre-retinal membranes occurring. If a preretinal membrane is present, it can be surgically removed. Patients who develop a preretinal membrane after surgery should go to the hospital and follow the doctor’s instructions.
