Can the hand, foot and mouth vaccine prevent herpes pharyngitis?

The currently available HFMD vaccine can partially prevent herpes pharyngitis because the HFMD vaccine only targets enterovirus 71. In addition to causing HFMD, this virus can also cause herpes pharyngitis and can prevent a portion of herpes pharyngitis. There is no prevention for herpes pharyngitis caused by other pathogens. Other viruses include coxsackievirus group A type 16, echovirus, and others. The vaccine for HFMD currently only targets enterovirus 71 because this virus causes more seriously ill children. It is not particularly likely that coxsackievirus group A 16 or other viruses will cause severe disease, and the main purpose of this vaccine is to prevent severe disease, both from severe hand, foot and mouth disease and from severe herpes pharyngitis. Viruses other than enterovirus 71 may also cause severe disease, and it is not safe to assume that you will not get severe HFMD or severe herpes pharyngitis again just because you get the HFMD vaccine.
