Do gallstones hurt?

Whether gallstones hurt or not depends on the patient’s specific condition; some patients experience pain and some do not. Gallstones are categorized into gallbladder stones, intrahepatic bile duct stones and extrahepatic bile duct stones according to the location of occurrence. 1. Gallbladder stones: most patients are asymptomatic, but a small number of patients show biliary colic, epigastric pain, for symptomatic gallbladder stones, it is recommended to consult a doctor as soon as possible, and active treatment. 2. Intrahepatic bile duct stones: patients may be asymptomatic for many years, but may also manifest as distension and pain in the upper abdomen and chest and back. If the patient has recurrent symptoms, surgical treatment is recommended. Asymptomatic patients can choose regular observation and follow-up. 3. Extrahepatic bile duct stones: Patients are usually asymptomatic or only have discomfort in the upper abdomen, but when the stones block the bile ducts, recurrent abdominal pain or jaundice will occur. If the symptoms recur, surgery is recommended as soon as possible.
