There is no such thing as a specific trio of herbs, but Chinese herbs such as yam, cinnamon and seahorse can be used to treat excessive nighttime urination. Yam is a medicinal substance, as a Chinese medicine, belongs to the lung, spleen and kidney meridians, and is sweet and flat in nature. It has the effects of tonifying the spleen, lung and kidney, nourishing yin and qi, stopping leucorrhea and astringent spermatozoa, and can be used for spermatorrhea, frequent urination and leucorrhea due to kidney deficiency. Yam is used for frequent night urination, lumbar and knee soreness (a feeling of soreness and weakness in the waist and knees), slippery sperm and premature ejaculation, enuresis, and lumbar and knee soreness in kidney qi deficiency. It should not be used by those with dampness in the middle (too much dampness causing fullness and discomfort in the spleen and stomach) or with accumulation of stagnation, and the adverse effects are not yet clear. Cinnamon is a medicinal substance, as a traditional Chinese medicine, with the properties of pungency, sweetness and great heat, it has the effects of relieving pain and dispersing cold, tonifying fire and assisting yang (replenishing the body’s yang qi), etc., and is often used together with ripened dihuang (熟地黄), appendicia (附子), and cornelian cherry. Cinnamon is used to treat nocturnal dysuria associated with insufficient kidney yang and failure of vital fire (weakness of the body’s kidney yang and reduced function of warming and promoting the movement of qi and blood). It should be used with caution for those with bleeding tendency, pregnant women, and those with yin deficiency and fire exuberance, and should not be used with red stone resin, the adverse effects of which are not clear. Hippocampus is sweet, salty, warm, and belongs to the liver and kidney meridians. It has the efficacy of eliminating swelling and dispersing knots, warming the kidney and strengthening the yang, and can be used for impotence in kidney deficiency, spermatorrhea and urination, and is often used with raspberries, cuttlebone and wolfberries to treat frequent nocturia. Pregnant women and people with yin deficiency and fire (deficiency of yin and essence in the body and hyperactive fire) should not take hippocampus, and the adverse effects are not clear. Please use the medication under doctor’s supervision. If you have frequent night urination, please go to the hospital to avoid delay in treatment.
