Does cod liver oil lower blood lipids?

Cod liver oil does not lower blood lipids. Cod liver oil is a fatty oil extracted from the livers of deep-sea fish and is rich in n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids, as well as vitamin A and vitamin D. Supplementation with small doses of cod liver oil can inhibit platelet activity, which can lower whole blood viscosity and reduce cardiovascular events, but does not improve blood lipid levels. Supplementation with high doses of cod liver oil can lower triglycerides but increase LDL cholesterol. Therefore, cod liver oil does not lower blood lipids. Patients with hyperlipidemia can choose appropriate lipid-lowering drugs for treatment after doctor’s evaluation. The common lipid-lowering drugs in clinical practice mainly include atorvastatin, simvastatin, and lipidcon, etc. In addition, patients with hyperlipidemia should pay attention to avoid eating fatty meat, animal offal, fried food, etc. They should also pay attention to a light diet, drink more water, and exercise properly, which can help regulate blood lipids in the normal range.
