What are the dietary considerations for adults with lactose intolerance?

Adults with lactose intolerance should avoid taking or minimize taking dairy products that contain lactose in their diet.
Lactose intolerance in adults is due to the lack of the enzyme lactase in the body that digests lactose, and symptoms such as diarrhea, bloating, abdominal pain, nausea, and vomiting occur after taking dairy products.
There are special dietary requirements for adults with lactose intolerance. Powdered milk and other dairy products containing lactose can be taken sparingly, or they can be replaced with powdered milk containing galactose or added lactase.
For patients with mild symptoms of lactose intolerance, dairy products such as yogurt, cheese or soymilk can also be substituted, or milk can be drunk in small quantities and taken with food such as buns and bread to reduce symptoms.
After dietary control, if the symptoms of lactose intolerance are not relieved, further examination is needed and treatment under doctor’s guidance.
