Does a runny nose and cough heal on its own?

Infants with runny nose and cough may heal on their own, but parents should actively observe the infant’s condition and pay attention to controlling the environmental temperature. Runny nose in infants is mostly caused by low temperature stimulation, such as cold air conditioning at home or convective wind from open windows, etc. Coughing is also a reflex behavior of respiratory tract in response to stimulation. If the amount of clear nasal discharge is small and coughing occurs occasionally, no special treatment is needed, so it is enough to increase clothing appropriately, pay attention to the room temperature and observe the baby’s condition. However, if the amount of runny nose increases and the frequency of coughing increases or even coughing up sputum, it may be caused by a cold, which needs to be taken seriously and the infant should be hydrated and given vitamins. If the infant’s symptoms are still difficult to relieve or continue to worsen, he or she should be treated with medication under the guidance of a doctor. Since infants have poor resistance, parents should pay attention to maintaining a suitable indoor environment and proper ventilation, which can effectively reduce the occurrence of runny nose and cough.
